What are ghosts and spirits?

Most people are of the opinion that the terms “ghosts“ and “spirits“ can be used interchangeably. This is definitely not the case. Ghosts are simply “recordings” of a deceased person, animal or even an inanimate object. Ghosts do not usually communicate with the living at all, in fact they may not even know you are around. Ghosts may be oblivious as to what is going on around them, because they are just the residual energy left behind. As with spirits, they are the actual sentient presence, or soul of an individual who have remained in the material world after his or her physical body has died. Spirits sometimes may not know they are dead or had experienced a violent or unexpected death.

 What is a haunting?

A haunting is usually described as a repeated appearance of phenomena commonly associated with ghost, spirits, and poltergeists. A place where ghosts or spirits seemed to reside in or to which they return, or the manifestation of a ghostly presence attached to a specific person or location. Usually a combination of cold spots, apparitions, dark shadows, missing objects and other forms of paranormal activity that tend to be witnessed by more than one person over an extended period of time.

 What is a poltergeist?

A poltergeist is the German word for “noisy spirit.” A paranormal manifestation that is generally centered around an individual (usually an adolescent experiencing stressful situations) in which objects disappear or thrown about. The individual the activity is centered around is called “the epicenter.” There is very little communication between the “epicenter” and the spirit, and many researchers believe that the cause of the poltergeist is actually latent telekinetic ability (caused by “the epicenter” under stressful situations) rather than an actual spirit.

 Are there any other types of haunting?

There are actually four different types of haunting that paranormal investigators are aware of. The first being ghosts, the second being spirits, the third are poltergeist activity, and the fourth are known as entities. Entities are usually angelic or demonic in nature. Angelic may be a very private matter between them and the individual. If there are angelic entities around you will have a sense of peace and well being. As the case with demonic spirits, it is totally opposite. An individual may feel weighted down in certain rooms or actually have physical scratches caused by this type of entity. Growling sounds coming from everywhere is another sign of a demonic haunting. These entities are very rare but intend to cause harm or wreak havoc on people. These entities usually were invited into a home usually through an Ouija board or a séance to try and communicate with the dead, thus creating an “opening” for a demonic entity to enter through.

  How do I get rid of a ghost, spirit or entity?

Getting rid of ghosts and spirits may be difficult. The reason is because ghosts are actual “recordings” and spirits may not ever leave. In reality, you cannot get rid of a ghost. Ghosts will not harm you but may frighten you if you see them. Spirits on the other hand may be there to find a living relative or may just get a kick out of scaring you. You may tell a spirit to leave and usually the activity in the house eventually ceases. As with entities, you can get rid of them usually by having a priest or clergymen come and perform a blessing on your home. They will eventually leave the home and there usually will not be anymore activity.

 NOTE: GHOST of Pinellas does not “rid” a home of spirits or entities, but we can get you in contact with a paranormal group that “specialize” in getting rid of spirits.

Generally you can't “help” a spirit. All you can do is advise it to move on into the light. You typically really don’t want to help a spirit, leave this to the paranormal researchers and investigators.

Your house may be haunted if you have experienced any of the following: Black masses or shadows, balls of light, apparitions, unknown cold spots, physical contact with unseen forces, hearing voices or strange noises, odors that are from an unknown source or any of the descriptions stated above.

There are many ways a house becomes haunted. One way is the house has always been haunted but when you moved in, the activity started up either because the spirit has some sort of connection with one of the individuals or they don’t want anyone to take "their" space. A second reason activity may start up, is if you remodel a room or change the home in some way. The theory behind this is that the spirit used to live there and does not want you changing their surroundings, thus creating spirit activity. The use of an Ouija board or séance can “invite” an entity into the home.

NOTE: Using an Ouija board or performing seances is not recommended, as this can lead to disatstrous consequences. 

A ghost cannot harm you. Spirits on the other hand can possibly harm you. In most cases a spirit may be trying to get your attention somehow and not actually trying to hurt you, (ie: moving an object that lands on your foot). There is real no threat when it comes to ghosts and spirits. Demonic entities or “negative” entities can in fact physically touch you more so than a spirit. Scratches or burn marks may appear on the skin, but in very, very rare cases does this type of haunting ever occur.

First you should tell the spirit or entity to leave and it is not welcome in your home. Take a stand! You would be surprised how often this works, just by demanding it to leave. If that does not work you and you still feel like you or someone else is being harassed by an entity, you should create a mental aura around your whole body, like being inside an egg. Imagination and will are powerful tools in dealing with these types of entities. These demonic spirits cannot posses people without permission. The permission is fear, so do not give it that fear to feed off from. The only way to actually get rid of these entities is a priest must perform a blessing on the premises.
